Hair Shine
Healthy hair shine isn’t a product of oiliness, but a matter of physics. True shine is the result of light reflecting evenly off a smooth surface. This surface is the hair’s outermost layer, the cuticle, which is made up of tiny overlapping scales. When these scales lie flat and are tightly sealed, they create a uniform plane that reflects light, resulting in a glossy, luminous appearance.
The primary enemy of shine is anything that lifts, roughens, or damages this smooth cuticle layer. Heat styling, chemical treatments, and even harsh brushing can cause the cuticle scales to raise and break, scattering light rather than reflecting it. Similarly, buildup from styling products and hard water minerals can create a dulling film on the hair shaft, preventing its natural luster from showing through.
Restoring shine is a process of smoothing and sealing the hair’s cuticle. This can be achieved by using products with a slightly acidic pH to help flatten the scales, rinsing with cool water, and applying lightweight oils or serums to seal in moisture. Periodically using a clarifying shampoo is also essential to remove dulling residue. At sylvaia, we explore the science behind creating a smooth, reflective hair surface for maximum healthy shine.
