Botox
Botox is the well-known brand name for a cosmetic injectable that uses a purified form of botulinum toxin to temporarily relax facial muscles. It is the most popular treatment of its kind in the world, classified as a neuromodulator because of its ability to interrupt the nerve signals that cause muscles to contract and form wrinkles.
The treatment works by blocking the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that tells muscles to move. When injected into specific muscles—like those between the brows, on the forehead, or around the eyes—it prevents them from contracting during facial expressions. This causes the overlying dynamic wrinkles (lines formed by movement) to soften dramatically or even disappear, resulting in a smoother, more refreshed, and well-rested appearance.
Botox is a medical procedure that should only ever be administered by a qualified and experienced medical professional, such as a dermatologist, plastic surgeon, or registered nurse practitioner. The effects are not permanent and typically last between three to four months. A thorough consultation is key to discussing your aesthetic goals and ensuring a beautifully natural-looking result that never looks “frozen.”
